About the Journal

The Escola Anna Nery (EAN) Journal of Nursing is a scientific journal maintained by the Escola de Enfermagem Anna Nery of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, since 1997. It is a journal with national and international circulation, a member of the Ibero-American Network of Scientific Editing in Nursing (Rede Iberoamericana de Editoração Científica de Enfermagem (RedEDIT), affiliated to the Associação Brasileira de Editores Científicos (ABEC) since 2010, and to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) since 2016.

Both the name of EAN and that of its maintaining institution were inspired by Anna Nery's importance to Brazilian nursing. Anna Nery, born on December 13, 1814 in Cachoeira, Bahia, is considered to be Brazil's first nurse. After her three sons left for the Paraguayan War, she could not remain indifferent to the suffering of her compatriots and the separation of her children. She wrote to the President of the Province of Bahia, offering herself as a nurse. Accepted, she worked in hospitals in Rio Grande do Sul, where she acquired technical knowledge from nuns.

Among the 60,000 or so “sons” she lost in the war, Anna Nery faced the death of her biological firstborn. With the end of the conflict, she returned home with six orphans and received several medals for her care of the sick. At the age of 65, on May 20, 1880, Anna Nery passed away. Her legacy inspired both the journal's name and the name of the first nursing school based on the Nightingalean Model in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, in this case the Escola de Enfermagem Anna Nery, which is the EAN's maintainer.

The abbreviated title of the journal is Esc. Anna Nery, which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic strips.
